The Geoff Herrington Foundation has awarded £2.1m in grants since it was established in March 2015. Over 150 grants have been awarded to 57 UK-based charities or not-for-profit organisations working to transform the lives of socially or economically disadvantaged young people in the UK and less developed countries. The Geoff Herrington Foundation has now exhausted its’ funds and is no longer awarding further grants.

The majority of work supported through Geoff Herrington Foundation (GHF) grants has been in the UK (60% by value, £1.25m) with 40% of funding for international work. A quarter of GHF funding has supported young people in Africa, and a total of 18 countries have benefitted from GHF grants to enrich the lives and education of young people in these countries.

Examples of Organisations supported by GHF grants

The following are examples of the 57 organisations that have received grants from the Geoff Herrington Foundation since 2015 for projects to support less advantaged children and young people in the UK and internationally:

  • Action Village India – to support the secondary school education of girls in rural India through tutoring, covering school fees and providing school materials.

  • African Promise supporting the transformation of a 500+ pupil primary school in rural Kenya into a ‘model’ school through funding construction of high-quality classrooms.  

  • Build It International  to support less advantaged young people through construction skills training in Zambia, including work placements and life skills, to help them work and thrive. 

  • Change Foundation – to support their 9 month ‘Street Elite’ sports-related training for work programme for marginalised young Londoners.
  • Dan Eley Foundation – to support impoverished young people to undertake 7 month accountancy training courses in Colombia, including a 3 month work placement.
  • Equal Aqua Uganda – to improve access to clean water, sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities and knowledge in poor rural schools in Uganda.
  • Ethiopiaid – to provide education and vocational skills to disadvantaged girls living in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), helping them to expand their opportunities and make decisions about their future.
  • GASP Motor Project – to support disengaged secondary school pupils in Surrey to develop skills in motor mechanics, including achieving AQA Awards.
  • Guildford Shakespeare Company – to provide performances of Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet to Year 10/11 pupils in less advantaged schools in Surrey. Find out more
  • Health Improvement Project Zanzibar – to develop programmes in schools and youth clubs to support the mental well-being of young people in Zanzibar.
  • Kenya Children Centres – to support various projects enhancing the lives and education of children and young people living in slum areas of Kenya. Find out more
  • Ocean Youth Trust South – for bursaries to enable disadvantaged youngsters to undertake a 5 day sailing voyage in the English Channel and gain a RYA Yachting Certificate.
  • Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation – for their ‘Buoyed Up’ programme providing 3 days of sailing instruction for 10-11 year olds from disadvantaged schools in Essex, in partnership with Brightlingsea Sailing Club.
  • Skillway – to support Surrey youngsters not thriving in school by providing woodwork and metal working skills. Find out more
  • Streatham Youth and Community Trust – to support programmes to train and develop Young Leaders involved in youth clubs in South London.
  • Street Child – to address problems of low literacy and support early childhood education in impoverished areas of Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Liberia. Find out more
  • Tall Ships Youth Trust – for bursaries to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds across England to undertake a 4-7 day youth development sea voyage.
  • Unique Voice – to provide arts-based workshops to less advantaged youngsters in different settings including a Secure Children’s Home and schools in deprived areas of Bristol.
  • War Child – for a range of projects supporting young people and children living in war torn situations in Afghanistan, DR Congo and Syria.
  • Watts Gallery Trust – to support artist-led workshops for vulnerable youngsters, in partnership with Surrey County Council’s Youth Justice Service, and as part of the Gallery’s Art for All Community Learning Programme.
